Started in 2001, the .NAME TLD is the sole TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At first, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to book john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Existing third-level domain names remained online.
